As we all
know, this is a period of transition from military to civil rule in the history
of this country when the military will hand over rein of power to the civilians.
Every political party has nominated its presidential candidate, but there is
one thing I believe that the majority of Nigeria has not noticed: All our
presidential candidates are men. There is no woman among those chosen to run
for the presidency
At time, I wonder, why a woman can’t at least be
allowed to enter the presidential race. Since our independence in 1960, no
woman has been given the chance to become the president and I think our great
nation is making mistake.
Firstly, if Nigeria has a woman as its president,
there are many advantages we can enjoy from her tenure. One of such benefit is
that she will be an honest president. If we have an honest president, we are on
the path of economy growth and development. More good roads, low-cost houses hospitals
and clinics and schools would be provide for Nigerians. More industries and
factories would be built in order to create more jobs for unemployed Nigerians.
Moreover,
there is a saying that: what a man can do, a woman can do better’ indeed, this
saying is true because women, all over the world, have proved to be better
Leader than men. For instance, look at one of the world’s most famous leader, Margaret thatcher. She is a woman of virtue, respect and substance. She proved that women
can excel in the man’s world and she is respect among world leader for that.
If Nigeria’s next president is a woman, she would be
upright, disciplined and very firm. She would realise that she is in a man‘s
world and that she has many challenge to face. This will make her prove her
worth. She would not bend for anybody who could make her commit any error, and
if we have a president who is very firm and determined, bribery and corruption will
be curbed.
Furthermore, there will be no case of internal
wrangling and fighting among the different ethnic group in the country. It is
the nature of woman to be peaceful and loving. She will promote peaceful
co-existence among the various tribes as well as good neighborliness with the
country’s neighbours’. In this way, there would not be any cause for war.
I must also state that women are very compassionate
by nature, although they can be firm. If
Nigeria has a female president, she would feel strongly for the poor, the
little children that beg on the roads, she old people who have nobody to take
care of them and the insane who constitute nuisance in our society. Special homes
and institution would be built for them and those who do not have clothing and
shelter would be taken care of.
Finally, I must say that if Nigeria elects a female
president it will be a great turning point in the history of Nigeria. It will
also be an honour to have Nigeria’s first civilian president after the
prolonged military rule to be a woman. If Nigeria can give a woman chance to
rule, I am sure it will not regret it.
